If elected in November, a Liberal Nationals Government will contribute $3 million towards a Bayside Council project to build new netball facilities in Bayside, supporting more than 2,600 locally registered players.
The funding will go towards the establishment of two indoor netball courts at Bayside Council’s preferred site in Wangara Road Sandringham.
Bayside’s existing netball site in Thomas Street Hampton does not meet current requirements, with player numbers already exceeding those projected for 2031. Because of this situation, there are up to 200 players sitting out each week due to lack of court space.
$50,000 of the funds pledged will be set aside for Bayside Council to investigate the future use of the existing netball site at Thomas Street Hampton for ongoing sporting and recreation use.
This investment by a future Liberal Nationals Government will provide for a true regional sporting hub for netball in Bayside, addresses short and long-term participation demands and remove barriers from participation for young people of all ages and abilities – especially girls.
The Liberal Nationals will continue to work together with the Sandringham District Netball Association, Bayside Council and Netball Victoria to advocate for additional funding by the federal government.
Unlike Daniel Andrews who has decided to give a massive $225 million of taxpayers’ money to the AFL to upgrade Etihad Stadium, the Liberal Nationals are getting behind local sporting clubs and organisations who need our support.
Comments attributable to the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, David Hodgett:
“Thanks to the advocacy of Asher Judah, Liberal candidate for Bentleigh, Brad Rowswell, Liberal candidate for Sandringham and James Newbury, Liberal candidate for Brighton, I am thrilled to make this announcement of $3 million for a new regional netball facility in Bayside.
The Liberal Nationals won’t hand over millions of dollars to the AFL to spend on Etihad Stadium, our goal will be to prioritise funding to our suburban and country sports clubs.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Sandringham, Brad Rowswell:
“As a local who has grown up and spent my whole life in this area, I understand first-hand the importance of local sporting clubs and organisations and the need to invest in them. This $3 million investment will secure the future of netball in bayside for future generations.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Brighton, James Newbury:
“It’s great that more kids want to get involved in sport. That’s why Bayside netball has outgrown its current home in Hampton. We will make sure that Bayside netball has an even bigger new home in Sandringham. Because the Liberal Party recognises the challenges of a growing population and is investing in community infrastructure that will meet our future needs.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Bentleigh, Asher Judah:
“We need our kids outdoors, not staring at screens on the couch. This investment in local sport strengthens the hands of mums and dads struggling with this constant parenting battle.”
